Abstract: Machine learning (ML) including deep neural networks and natural language processing (NLP) are powerful approaches to automating and scaling up the analysis of people’s opinions and behaviors. In this talk, Dr. Xiao Hu will demonstrate her research in applying ML and NLP to improving student learning in various contexts ranging from discussion forums, collaborative writing, to digital maker activities in schools and higher education. In addition, through extracting and analyzing text features from music lyrics and social media, Dr. Hu’s group also explored music emotion and listeners’ psychological well-being. The talk will conclude with a discussion on lessons learned and challenges ahead of us.
Bio: Dr. Xiao Hu, is an Associate Professor in the Human Communication, Development and Information Science (CDIS) Academic Unit in the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). She directs the research group of Cultural Computing and Multimodal Information Research and is an inaugural member of the Institute of Data Science in HKU. Dr. Hu’s research has been funded by the Research Grant Council, Environment Conservation Fund, and Quality Education Fund of Hong Kong S.A.R. and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. In HKU, Dr. Hu designed a doctoral level course on Text Analytics in Education, and a master level course on Learning Analytics and Data Science.
Dr. Hu serves as the coordinating co-chair of the Big Data in Education and Learning Analytics (BDELA) track in the IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT), a section editor of Transactions of the International Society for Music Information Retrieval (TISMIR) and an associate editor of Information Processing & Management (IP&M).
