David Bissell is a social and cultural geographer based at the Australian National University. His research combines post-structuralist theories with qualitative fieldwork to generate new ways of thinking about the powers of mobilities. He is editor of Stillness in a Mobile World (Routledge, 2010), and The Routledge Handbook of Mobilities (2014). His monograph on the everyday transformations of commuting mobilities will be published by MIT Press in 2017.

David is currently working on two projects that are exploring intersections of mobility, labour and digital technologies. The first is about how workplaces are changing in response to digital technologies, especially automation and robotics. The second is about how mobile working practices are creating new forms of intimacy and new understandings of home. His previous project explored how commuting in cities is giving rise to multiple forms of social and political transformation. At this event, he will talk about some of the problems that are currently interesting him most about these projects, and he looks forward to hearing about the projects that are currently being undertaken by graduate students and faculty.
